How do you set up DMARC on IONOS?

Updated July 3, 2026

To set up DMARC on IONOS, log in, open Domains & SSL, select your domain, open its DNS settings, and add a TXT record with host name _dmarc and a value starting with v=DMARC1. IONOS usually publishes the change within an hour.

What you need before starting

  • An IONOS account with the domain using IONOS nameservers (if you delegated DNS elsewhere, add the record at that host)
  • A DMARC record value (generate one with our free DMARC generator if you don't have one yet)
  • Optional but recommended: SPF and DKIM already configured for your email provider

Step by step

  1. 1

    Open your domain's DNS settings

Sign in at ionos.com (formerly 1&1), open the Menu and choose Domains & SSL. Click the gear icon next to your domain and select DNS, or click the domain and open the DNS tab.

  2. 2

    Add a new TXT record

Click Add record and choose TXT as the record type.

  3. 3

    Enter the DMARC record

In the Host name field enter _dmarc (IONOS appends your domain automatically; don't type the full _dmarc.yourdomain.com). Paste your DMARC record into the Value field and leave TTL at the default.

    Host _dmarcType TXT
    v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:[email protected]; fo=1
  4. 4

    Save the record

Click Save. IONOS states DNS changes can take up to an hour to publish, sometimes longer for full propagation.

  5. 5

    Verify it's live

Run your domain through our free DMARC checker. If the record shows up and parses cleanly, you're done. The first aggregate reports typically arrive within 24-48 hours.

Check that it worked

Our free checker reads your DMARC record live and explains every tag. Run it after the record saves.

Common mistakes

Typing the full hostname in the Host name field

IONOS appends your domain automatically. Entering _dmarc.yourdomain.com creates a record at _dmarc.yourdomain.com.yourdomain.com, which receivers never look up. Enter only _dmarc.

Adding a second DMARC record instead of editing the first

IONOS Mail and Microsoft 365 bundles sometimes pre-configure email DNS. Check the record list for an existing _dmarc TXT record and edit it. Duplicates make receivers ignore both.

Editing a subdomain's zone by mistake

If your IONOS contract lists several domains and subdomains, confirm you selected the root domain. A DMARC record placed under a subdomain doesn't cover mail from the main domain.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same for 1&1 accounts?
Yes. 1&1 rebranded to IONOS; older dashboards may label things slightly differently, but DNS still lives under Domains & SSL → your domain → DNS.
How long does an IONOS DNS change take?
IONOS quotes up to an hour for its own nameservers to update, and up to 24-48 hours for worldwide propagation. In practice most records are visible well within the hour.
Does IONOS Mail Basic need extra DMARC configuration?
No extra DMARC steps: one _dmarc record covers the domain. Do confirm SPF and DKIM are set up for whichever mail product you use, since DMARC passes based on those.

The record is step one. The reports are the point

Publishing p=none starts a stream of XML reports about everyone sending as your domain. DMARCPath turns them into a plain-English dashboard and walks you to full protection at p=reject. One domain free.
